Silas Marner by George Eliot - Carefully examine the way in which the momentous events of New Year’s Eve dramatically changed Silas Marner’s life. Carefully examine the way in which the momentous events of New Year’s Eve dramatically changed Silas Marner’s life. â€Å"Silas Marner† the novel wrote by George Eliot, is about the linen weaver of an isolated village known as Raveloe. Marner was once a well respected member of a community in a northern district town called Lantern Yard. But after everyone thinking he had been possessed by Satan, a string of events took place where he lost everything he ever valued. Marner was a very religious man and a devote Christian. He was always socialising and very much part of the society. He was forever in the church and gave everything he had to them. An example for this is shown on page 14. â€Å"†¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Marner was highly thought of in that little hidden world known to itself as a church.† This showed that people thought a lot of him and was an extremely popular guy. He had many friends, but one special one who he relied upon for everything. His name was William Dane. He was also in a loving relationship with his fiancà ©e Sarah. After Silas was framed for the theft of the church money, by his so called friend William Dane, he becomes a complete social outcast. At first he thinks God will clear him, but this hope turned into misery when his religious community casts him out. His faith in god is completely lost. Sarah breaks up with him and soon marries William Dane. This makes him realise he can not trust man either. This is shown on page 20, â€Å"†¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦.Poor Marner went out with that despair in his soul- That shaken trust in God and man, which is a little short of madness to... ... isolated outcast, to a suspicious foreigner and now a well respected member of his society. Marner’s main priority is Eppie. This is shown when the money is handed back to him and he says â€Å"†¦.it takes no hold of me now.† This shows all of his love is concentrated on Eppie. His life has had many ups and downs but he has got on with it and in the end has become a much stronger person, with his faith in God and man restored. This is shown when he says, â€Å"†¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Since the time the child was sent to me and I’ve come to love her as myself, I’ve had light enough to trusten by, and now she says she’ll never leave me, I think I shall trusten till I die.† This puts his mind at ease that he will always have someone to love who will love him back. All of these events have shown that Marner’s life has changed dramatically to make him a much stronger, reliable person.

Dreams in F. Scott Fitzgeralds The Great Gatsby Essay -- F. Scott Fit

Dreams in F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, is a novel about the American Dream. In the Great Gatsby, the dream is that one can acquire happiness through wealth and power. To get his happiness Jay attempts to reacquire the love of his lost sweet heart, Daisy. The main problem with Jay's dream is that Daisy is married. Gatsby's personal dream symbolizes the larger American Dream 'The pursuit of happiness'. Jay Gatsby longs for the past. Surprisingly he devotes his adult life trying to recapture it and dies in its pursuit. In the past, Jay had a love affair with a young rich girl, Daisy. Daisy and Jay had fallen in love with each other in spite of knowing that they could not marry because of the difference in their social status. For the first time in Jay?s life he was truly happy. During their courtship, Jay was sent off to war. Upon returning from the war, Jay found out that Daisy had married a wealthy man by the name of Tom Buchannon. Jay then spends his life acquiring wealth to reach her economic standards, in hope that he can marry her and rekindle the happiness that he once had. His love for Daisy was impossible in society because "he was at present a penniless young man without a past?he had no comfortable family standing behind him" (156). Gatsby encounters his dream of love at this point of his life. He knew that at that time a relationship of love was impossible with Daisy due to his low social standing. Gatsby became determined to breach that gap between them in order to have a loving relationship with Daisy. He did reach the physical circumstances necessary to love her, but he had focused too much on money and power the previous five years of his life. He wanted his love with Daisy to flourish. Unfortunately, he had lost the ability to love. He no longer possessed moral integrity or the ability to handle a relationship. Society is often broken up into different social groups by their economic status. Those of lower classes believe that their problems will go away if they can gain enough wealth to reach the upper class. Many people believe that the American Dream is this joining of the upper class, and once reaching that point, not having to be concerned about money at all. The logic behind this is that being poor keeps people from being happy, a... ... past. And finally, Jay?s dream was his own death, in that the rest of his life was spent trying to relive the past. His dream consumed his life so much that it had changed him to the point where he was no longer a human. He was more of a zombie who was driven to do anything it would take to realize his dream. The Great Gatsby as he came to be known, was just a young boy who wanted love more than anything else in life. His strong ambition, and immoral ways to achieve his dream took him to his grave. His life in this story is one of constantly wanting what other people have, whether it is money, social standing, or another man?s wife. It is my belief that is what F. Scott Fitzgerald wants us to take home with us. The dangers of coveting what other people have. Bibliography: Novelguide.com. ?Novel Analysis, The Great Gatsby.? Online. Human Resources Final Project Essay

The role of the HR Department of the Department of Human Services (DHS) is to handle all aspects of employee relations. The areas it covers are Recruiting and Selection, Training and Development, Performance Management, Employee Discipline, Compensation and Benefits and Labor Relations. Each of these areas is vital to the effective operation of the company as a whole. Although each area is outlined in detail, there is still room for improvement in each. The Recruiting and Selection process at the Department of Human Services (DHS) is a fairly simple one. The requirements for the applicants are not strenuous; thereby allowing a wide range of applicants to be considered for the positions. It is recommended that a personality test be given to each applicant in order to gage their ability to handle the many different scenarios they will encounter while employed at DHS. A prerequisite for applying should be that the applicant has worked in an environment which required handling stressful situations. The Training and Development process at DHS consists of both Internal and External training methods. One such external method requires the new hire to travel to the corporate headquarters in Atlanta, GA. This training lasts for two weeks and requires the applicant to stay nightly at that location to complete the training. A suggested change to that training would be that it is held locally for those new hires that may not be able to travel for such long periods of time due to family obligations, such as having small children. As far as the internal training is concerned, the coaching portion done one on one with the new hire should be extended well after the training process has ended. This will ensure that the employee is still understanding his or her job duties and performing them accordingly. The Performance Management aspect of DHS is one in which the employees are evaluated yearly to measure their success in their position on an individual and team level. Each employee is measured according to his or her  position’s requirements and job duties. A beneficial change to this process would be to review each section of the evaluation form with the employee well in advance of their evaluation date. This will give the employee a heads up on the areas within their job that they need to focus one and the goals they need to achieve before their yearly evaluation time arrives. The Employee Discipline process at DHS serves to ensure that employees are receiving corrective action whenever a workplace infraction occurs. The employee can receive either an oral or written disciplinary action depending on the severity and frequency of the offense. Employees are given feedback on how to correct their action after the offense occurs. However, there are times when an employee is not given the proper follow up and feedback after an infraction occurs. This can in turn cause the employee to commit the offense again and make the disciplinary action process go to the next level. DHS should make sure proper follow up is done on a regular basis to ensure the education and growth of the employee. The Compensation and Benefits packages offered at DHS are designed to help make the company a competitive one. Salaries are paid on a bi-monthly basis on the 15th and last day of each month. Employees are given the option to add healthcare benefits, sign up for 401k or flexible spending accounts. There aren’t many incentives offered at DHS. One such incentive which could be offered is rewarding employees based on their monthly performance individually and as a team. This would assist with keeping employee morale high and giving them something to strive for. Also, the starting salary should be increased in order to keep the job a competitive one on the job market. Potential employees are attracted to a nice salary as well company incentives. It is essential for DHS to maintain strong and positive Labor Relations between employees and management. The employee should always feel as if they have the help and support of their management team. Communication between the two must be maintained at all times so that issues and concerns can be addressed effectively. One way for DHS to improve these relationships is for there to be more interaction between the employees and management in a non-working environment. This can be accomplished by  establishing company sporting leagues or having company picnics. The HR Department of DHS is the chief factor which ensures that the company is run smoothly and efficiently. Each functional area has a particular job to accomplish. It is important that each area be explored thoroughly to determine if each is accomplishing the tasks it has been given to handle. Implementing a few changes in each area will help to take the HR department to the next level. References Smith, A. E. (n.d.) What are furlough days? The Burger Boy

The Burger Boy The case study is about a fast food restaurant experiencing several problems that have affected its productivity. Workers have different responsibilities. However, due to the absence of two employees, some of them are forced to work more. The problems are indicative of the poor working conditions at fast food restaurants.Advertising We will write a custom case study sample on The Burger Boy specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Employees are poorly compensated even though they serve a large number of customers especially during breakfast and lunch hours thus overworking. Employees yell at each other because they are under pressure while doing their job. The Burger Boy has experienced several problems that have affected the output, efficiency, and effectiveness of the employees. In addition, these problems strain relationships between the employees. They include the lack of employee motivation, interpersonal conflicts, low morale, poor comm unication, poor performance, poor leadership, and employee dissatisfaction. Some employees do multiple jobs due to the lack of clear distribution of duties and employee absenteeism. Poor communication among the employees causes interpersonal conflicts and poor leadership. The employees yell at each other and the manager treats them disrespectfully. There is also a lack of job evaluation because the employees receive low compensation even though they overwork. The manager does not hire additional employees to reduce the workload. The number of employees required for Friday rush is 13. However, only 8 are present, and moreover they overwork without the additional payment. Most of these problems are associated with compensation. They include the lack of motivation, poor communication, interpersonal conflicts, disgruntlement, and poor performance. One of the most effective methods of motivating employees is offering them adequate compensation based on the amount of work done. However, t he employees at the Burger Boy are poorly compensated even though they overwork. For example, due to absenteeism, some employees are forced to help their colleagues. The manager (Otis) breaches the psychological contract by declining to let Marge go home.Advertising Looking for case study on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! The employees dissatisfaction due to low compensation is also a cause of poor communication. Interpersonal conflicts between the employees emanate from poor communication. They shout at each other because they are in bad moods. Their low productivity is evident from the amount of time it takes to serve a single customer. Usually, it takes two minutes and thirty second but they are taking three minutes and five seconds. This problem has also resulted from understaffing. Instead of the thirteen emplo yees that work during Friday rush, only eight are present. One of the signs of poor compensation is the decline in the employee morale and the conflicts among employees. Rewards are important because they increase the employees’ motivation and consequently increase their performance. However, the employees at the Burger Boy do not receive any kind of rewards. Rewards could help to solve several problems including job dissatisfaction, low morale, and poor quality of work. Employee dissatisfaction is evident from the employees’ tendency to complain about their jobs. Many employees are dissatisfied because they overwork and are undercompensated. For example, Marge is forced to abdicate her work because her shift is over even though more customers are trickling in. Besides, Leon complains to Otis and says that he is vexed by the inefficiency at the workplace because the employees who work during lunch shift do not stock items as required. In response, Otis tells Leon that he is tired of his whining and storms out of the office and goes home. He also complains of low wages. Otis is a poor leader because communication between him and employees is very poor. Poor leadership leads to negative employee attitudes and relationships. These problems can be solved by establishing employee reward programmes. To improve employee morale, it is important for employers to establish fair compensation packages and reward programmes. Otherwise, productivity, efficiency, and job satisfaction decline considerably.Advertising We will write a custom case study sample on The Burger Boy specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Additional hours of work are incentives that employers use to reward those employees whose performance is exceptional. It is similar to overtime. However, it involves working for additional hours besides overtime. Additional hours of work rewards are only effective if an employee is comfortable with the compen sation offered. Chuck was not happy with working for 30 hours per week because he was dissatisfied with his job and had low morale. Chuck complains about the low staffing because he is aware that he will do more work than it is required of him. With the amount of work done at the pay window, Chuck was probably not happy with working 33 hours per week. Newman was happy working 20 hours per week probably because he was satisfied with his work. In addition, he was comfortable with his compensation. Schedules may be used as rewards by allowing employees to work during their most favorable hours. Employers could allow employees to set their own working hours depending on availability and commitment to other responsibilities such as family and education. In addition, the employers could create flexible schedules that give their employees enough breaks and rest. It is important for the employees to get enough rest in order to avoid burnouts and stress that reduce performance.

Family Values Essays - Amitai Etzioni, Child Care, Agriculture

Family Values Essays - Amitai Etzioni, Child Care, Agriculture Family Values Christopher A. Schulz The Value of Families Society and family value have changed into an institutionalized process. A transformation has taken place within communities altering the traditional family ways. The system in which one parent worked, while the other parent tended to the children has almost become obsolete. This change triggered the formation of a discombobulated society where greed motivates both parents in the work force, leaving their children to be raised by institutions consisting of under-qualified personnel. In his article, The Value of Families, Amitai Etzioni examines this change and the consequences suffered as a result of it. Etzioni opens his essay by comparing parenthood to an industry. He states how the childcare industry has lost a large percentage of its employees to greed. He claims that this is due to an increase in the amount of women leaving their children home, or in childcare centers while they pursue careers. The insatiable desire for parents to earn more income, as opposed to spending quality time with their children, has been proven to cause a decrease in the maturity level of these neglected children at a later age. Throughout the article, Etzioni stresses the importance of parent-child interactions. He quotes Barbara Dafoe as saying Maybe there is indeed such a thing as a one-minute manger, but there is no such thing as a one-minute parent (Etzioni108). He uses Dafoe to prove his point that that quality time occurs within quality time. (Etzioni108). Quality time spent with children is crucial for their well being. The value of Families Eventually, Etzioni takes a sarcastic tone, as he brings up an old channel eleven commercial. In the commercial, a mother calls her son to inform him that she left ten dollars on the counter for dinner. Due to a lack of parental supervision and guidance, the child hangs up the phone, rolls up the ten-dollar bill, and uses it to sniff cocaine. Etzioni utilizes this commercial as a means to illustrate the necessity for parents to spend quality time with their children despite their desire to become successful in the work force. Etzioni goes on to tear apart the modern day childcare systems within the United States. He states that the day-care centers do not employ a sufficient amount of qualified personnel, as the people who are qualified frequently change jobs due to low incomes. This has a direct impact on the children, as it leaves them without a stable person in their lives. Along with illustrating the fact that the child-care systems in the United States lack stability, he also offered solutions. He stressed that parents get involved. By spending a few hours a week with their children, the parents are able to get involved, while leaving the children with a sense of stability. In Israel, where the author was raised, the people leave their children in a kibbutz. A kibbutz is a daycare center, in which, unlike ours, the people who rise the youth of their country are well rewarded for their profound work. Perhaps this type of system would benefit that of the United States.

Why Violent video games should not be banned

Why Violent video games should not be banned Introduction The essay is an argumentative one; violent games should not be banned. Recently there has been an endless and fierce debate on whether or not to banned violent video games. For instance, the countries that constitute the European Union are planning to ban some of the European games. However, it is the view of the majority of video games just like any other games are there to educate and entertain.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Why Violent Video Games Should not be Banned specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Although there are strong reasons brought forth by those who want violent video games to be banned here are reasons why we should not; increases self-esteem, reduction of pain, encourages teamwork, sharpening players’ wit among others (Sterngold, 2006). With regards to those in support of banning the game they hold the view that the games continuously poison the minds of the viewers especially th e young individuals. The argument in support of violent video games It is worth noting that there are indeed strong points that need to be given a second thought before we rush in banning violent video games. It has been argued and even proved that when kids play such games especially when the multiplayer type of game is available, then the children get to learn at a very early age to work as teammate which require teamwork. Arguably, this is advantageous as it helps in keeping children together in times of needs (Lebrilla, 2010). For this matter when they grow up, such individuals will be in a better position to be good team players. This concept has been currently deemed very vital in ensuring the success of an organization. Through the game, it is indeed tough to beat the opponent. However, through concentration, acquisition of skills and knowledge on how to win which has been learned from each other, children are capable of the emerging winner. With this, they grow knowing that to win, there is a need to have a team behind. As suggested by Bissell, 2008 violent video games have been thought to help especially those with very high tempers to release their anger by not hurting anybody. When very angry and one feels like inflicting pain on another human being, or even kill others, it has been thought appropriate to transfer such anger to violent video games. When one engages in a shoot out with an enemy in a video game, he/she might feel that the mission is accomplished.Advertising Looking for essay on education? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Aside from assisting young individuals to sharpen their wits and problem-solving skills, violent video game plays a significant role in helping young individuals even a few older members of the society to learn how to persevere. On the same line of thought, these games have made it possible for people to have a well-coordinated hand and eye movement (Cr aig et al. 2007). This has helped in making sure that reflex action/response is normal. The advantage of this is that it will play a significant role in keeping progressive illnesses at bay. Another major point that is in support of violent video games is that it helps in sustaining the country’s economy. It is apparent that the industry of violent video games has played a significant role in the economic growth of the country. The export of the same product to other nation generates foreign income for the country. Additionally, a good number of Americans derive their daily bread from the same industry (Konijn et al., 2007). For this reason, banning of violent video games will mean that the unemployment rate will go up and the money generated from the industry will be lost. The industry generates close to 21 billion dollars annually (Jones Ponton, 2003). Additionally, doctors have proved that despite violent games being useful; releasing anger, it is also helpful in helping a patient reduce pain. The current efforts hospitals show this is making to install such games. More importantly, the games help in entertaining the plays as well as the viewers. Just like when people feel entertained in watching a football match violent game provide the same to the affected party. Considering the fact that slightly over 70.0% of American teens play these games, if it is banned then they will indulge in even more risky activities in their quest to be entertained for instance drug abuse (Goldstein, 1998). Argument against violent video games It would not be rational if the argument that supports the banning of violent games are not brought to light. It has been brought in the violent limelight game pollutes the minds of American children.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Why Violent Video Games Should not be Banned specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More When a young individual engages too much in these game s, they are addicted. The result is that they will grow up and may put into practice what they saw. A recent incidence where a student walked in an institution of learning and started shooting at others killing them on the spot has been linked to violent video games (Anderson Dill, 2000). Similarly, just like any other thing that can bring addiction, violent video game when making a young individual addicted can be detrimental in their quest to learning. This is because most of the time, whenever they are free will, spend time playing such games (Ferguson, 2008). Although it has been argued that the game fosters socialization skills, it is evident that when one plays in non-multiplayer support, they grow up being persons with poor skills to socialize. Conclusion From the review of the issue of violent games, even though the game is intense, banning it will bring more harm than good. For those who advocate for the banning, it would be rational to critically analyze the benefits of t he game to individuals and even the society at large. For instance, it enhances teamwork, helps reduce pain, aid in releasing anger, and improves wit and hand-eye coordination among others. However, the disadvantages include polluting or poisoning young individuals, and addiction eats their time hence cannot engage actively in other vital activities. This thus warrants careful consideration from relevant stakeholders such as parents and the government. References Anderson, C. Dill, K. Ratio analysis Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Ratio analysis - Essay Example Financial ratio has its advantages to the company and the customers in equal or less gravity. In an article of transoceanic financial ratio analysis, it is easy for customer to look how the stocks look like. Customer will find it easy to evaluate the company-using price to earnings ratio. Such metric valuation uses the wisdom that that nonoperational aspects of the company such as asset impairment can affect earnings per share (Xiao, 2014).With this valuation, the company and customer can make advised decisions while investing or rectifying the areas of problem. Financial ratio analysis is also advantageous in that it is easy to come up with the components of returns. Such returns include pre-taxed interest and the pre-taxed margin. The two are the core profitability of the company before interest and the taxes. The higher margins show better prospects of the company. Another component of return is the assets turnover. Asset turnover is the revenue generated for the expenses of the assets (Xiao, 2014). In the Transoceanic financial ratio analysis article, it has a higher number indicating it is efficient in using its assets. On the disadvantages side, financial ratio analysis has couple of demerits. First and foremost, the financial ratio analysis cannot be used singularly or standalone method. They must be used hand in hand with an aggregate economy. The full economic cycle must be factored in, during analysis. Secondly, inflation can badly bloat the company’s balance sheet. On such scenario, the profit of the company will be affected in a bad fashion. In the long run of the financial analysis, the judgment will be will be interrupted on the patches where inflation infiltrated the company’s balance sheet. Financial analysis thus has its advantage and
